I started writing Denim at 16, during my senior year of high school, as part of my Berklee College of Music audition. At the time, I was graduating a year early, preparing to leave home, and navigating friendships, ambition, and growing pains all at once. The song quickly became more than an audition piece—it became a reflection of my resilience, my journey, and the challenges I faced chasing my dreams. That audition, paired with a musical theater piece, helped me earn a full-ride scholarship to Berklee.

Over two years, Denim evolved alongside me. I lived through its lyrics—cutting ties, starting fresh, and finding my voice despite betrayals, industry roadblocks, and the pressures of being a young Black woman pursuing a career nearly 1,000 miles from home. Every word, every seam in the song represents growth and transformation.

As the lyricist, performer, co-producer, and co-arranger, I infused Denim with R&B, pop, rock, and orchestral elements to showcase my versatility and vision. This song isn’t just music—it’s a testimony, a celebration of perseverance, and a reminder to keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles.
